Review: TuneFlex SmartClick

// July 12th, 2009 // View Comments // Technology

It’s been about a month since we won Griffin Technology’s $500 shopping spree and I wanted to show you how we are using these gifts and what we think of them.

Today we are going to talk about the TuneFlex SmartClick.

TuneFlex Out of every Griffin gadget we got, this one impressed me the most. As you can see in the pictures it fits Andrea’s 2005 Toyota Camry perfect. The power socket is placed perfectly for the TuneFlex. Not only does it put her iPhone at an optimal eye level for quick glances but it also keeps her iPhone charged.

The TuneFlex has a auxiliary headphone jack on the base of the power socket plug.TuneFlex AUX jack If you car has an auxiliary input then your set. Andrea’s Camry does not but a simple cassette adapter works great.

There are many iPod and iPhone accessory makers that make a product like this. But Griffin really goes beyond the expectations and delivers with the coolest remote.

The remote gives you wireless controls of the iPod player. You can strap it to the steering wheel or pass it around to passengers in the car so they can have control. The geniuses at Griffin used a decently strong magnet to hold the remote to the steering wheel base. It works beautifully and feels great. TuneFlex Remote

I wish my car’s power socket was in a better position because I would so steal this out of Andrea’s car. Which brings up a couple points about this product. The TuneFlex’s arm is very flexible. It’s holds it’s shape very well. So you can bend to your needs but ff your power socket is in some wonkey place then this may not work too well for you.

Second, you have to remove your iPhone completely from it’s case to use this. TuneFlex caseI was hoping that since Griffin makes these case that are dockable then they might work with the TuneFlex. The idea is that you only have to take the bottom piece off and slide the iPhone in. Unfortunately it’s doesn’t work that way. The holder doesn’t match the Clarifi or Elan smart dock cases. Now this is in now way a deal breaker. But I would pay $1.99 to have a custom TuneFlex dock holder that would work with the case left on or compatible with Griffin’s own Smartdock cases.

Over all I think the TuneFlex Smart Click is an amazing product and works as advertised. If you are needing a charging/radio solution for car then I highly recommend this product.

Here is a gallery of more photos for your viewing pleasure.

*Disclosure we won this product. We did not pay one penny for it. This is a review on how we like and use these products. Thank you to Griffin once again.*

Sometimes you do win.

I don’t know what it is but I have had some success lately with winning stuff on Twitter. Random and various things from $25 cash to a MacBook Pro laptop bag from radtech.com to Transformer 2 tickets that I sadly could not use but gave away. This time all my tweeting paid of big.

Griffin Technology is a company that makes very cool accessories for Macs, iPods, and of course iPhones. My first encounter with Griffin products was actually years ago. When I did a lot of video editing in Final Cut Pro I was looking for a device to help finely scrub through my video. That’s when I found Griffin’s PowerMate. powermate_2 It was and still is a thing of beauty. Everyone who saw my desk quickly noticed the PowerMate and asked about it. It worked great in any app you wanted to have a very tactile scrolling/scrubbing feel. Griffin also makes a few iPhone apps. One very popular one is called iTalk. I actually used it to record the audio of our baby girl’s heart beat during her first ultra sound. Worked great!

I’m not sure who exactly I heard it from but I heard through Twitter that Griffin was doing a big shopping spree to help promote their new blog. So I headed over to http://blog.griffintechnology.com to participate. You can see the contest blog post here. The contest was simple. Post a comment on our blog on what your favorite feature of the new iPhone3GS is and one will be randomly selected to win a $500 shopping spree. So I posted my comment and left it to fate. Here is a direct link to my comment.

To my surprise a few days later (completely forgetting about the contest) I get a tweet from one of my tweeps (friends on Twitter) @chrisherbert1 congratulating me on my winning comment. I actually missed @griffintech‘s own tweet announcing the winner. At first I didn’t quite believe it. I told Andrea and showed her the blog post announcing the winner with my face on it!

Almost immediately I went to GriffinTechnology.com and began looking through all their products and creating a wish list. You think spending $500 is easy but not when there is so many great products available that you just want them all.

This Monday our package from Griffin arrived. Watch the video below to see what we got.

Thanks once again to Griffin Technology for all the cool gear!

We are going to get some real world use out of all this stuff then post our mini reviews and thoughts.

Listening to our child’s heart beat for the first time.

Andrea and I had our second doctor’s appointment today. We thought it was just going to be a standard pee in a cup and how you doing kind of meeting. I was just sitting there getting ready to fire up Twitterrific or maybe NetNewsWire on my iPhone when the doc busted out this little ugly box. Next thing I know I’m hearing my son or daughter’s heart beat for the first time. THEN I’m like oh crap I wanted to record this. Thankfully iTalk from Griffin Technologies was loaded and just a couple taps away from capturing this moment. Worked like a charm, although my first gen iPhone started giving the little device some of the usual interference. Next time I’ll know to throw it in airplane mode then record.

Anyways it worked out great. It transferred to my Mac super quick via Wi-Fi. Have a listen!
